Rome Day 2: hey, if you can see it we can walk to it!

Today was filled with lots of walking – since we couldn’t get tickets to the Borghese Museum and gardens we decided to do do some other stuff instead…and stuff we did!

Merman Barberini statue

This morning started with a trip on the metro to a Barberini statue of a Merman – the bee coat of arms indicates the family (located just below the merman).

Maria im Vittoria church

We visited several church – the first being Maria in Vittorio which hosted many beautiful Bernini sculptures – these angels surrounded the incredible frescoed ceiling.

Followed by the Church of Santa Susanna (which is the American pilgrim church).

We also visted several fountains – the great thing about Roman fountains is they are spout fresh water so at many of them you can fill up your water bottle.

Santa Maria Maggiorre

Santa Maria Maggiorre church was incredible as well, and this is where Bernini is buried and they also have relics from baby Jesus sacred crib.

Santa Maria Maggiorre

It is one of Rome’s basilicas and is also a pilgrim church.

We haven’t seen to many gypsies yet but they are definitely around. This is an old gypsy outside of Santa Maria Maggiorre.

We got a little turned around on our way to the Trevi fountain but got to see some parts of ancient Rome – including the Colosseum.

It really was a great day for taking pictures – although with heat above 30 it was rather hot for walking!

Trevi fountain Rome

We finally made our way to the Trevi fountain which was probably the highlight of my day – although everything was pretty incredible!

It was very crowded but we were able to make our way down to the front to throw in our coins.

Here is me making my first wish – I almost never post photos of myself here but I like this photo! :0)

Spanish Steps

We finished our afternoon with a visit to the Spanish Steps – at this point we were pretty tired as we really only stopped for about 10-15 minutes to eat our sandwiches at 2pm.

But you have to climb the steps…

And then we visited the church at the top.

It had some very beautiful art as well and the front steps have an amazing view of the city!

We closed off our afternoon with some (expensive) gelato! But it was very tasty and worth sitting down! Afterward we walked back to the hotel to relax and then walked to find a place for dinner. We were pretty tired after all our trekking about so just found a weird little place near the hotel – I don’t think we would eat there again as the food was just okay and guys selling roses constantly come to the table.

Following dinner we returned to the hotel and sat on the roof top terrace before going back to the room to unwind and start charging all our batteries for tomorrow. We will be seeing the Pope give the Angelus tomorrow and will be spending some time at the Vatican and surrounding area. Alright gotta get to sleep!
