A few weeks ago I was asked to make a special cake – my cousin’s golden birthday cake. She was turning 10 on the 10th. I started thinking about this theme and came up with a design that was whimsical, bright and perhaps a bit impressive. Read the rest of this entry »

This week has been filled with cake! Friday I had the great pleasure of doing a second cake with GSL and yesterday I did a solo cake for my friends’ joint birthday. I wanted this cake to be interesting and reflect the farm. I called it a “homestyle cake” because I did the icing very natural. So it was a vanilla bean pound cake with a fruit jelly filling and then a vanilla bean icing. I loved seeing the little flecks of vanilla in the icing. Read the rest of this entry »

This week my friend and I had the exciting task of creating a cake for our friend’s birthday – the catch – we needed to decorate it in a tight timeframe at work.

For my nieces 2nd birthday I was asked to make a cake – she is really into peep, chirp and quack – I don’t know much about them but she really likes ducks, chicks and birds. I took that idea and decided to do a pond top designed cake.

As I mentioned this week I’m doing two cakes. Monday night I baked a lemon cake from scratch. I followed a Martha Stewart recipe and was happy with the results. (And loved my house smelling like lemons and cake all night!) I’m going to do an crushed almond or pecan filling between the 2 layers. I’m making a chocolate marshmallow fondant and decorating with pink and teal/blue circles. I will do fondant “pearls” around the edge of the cake in one of both colors. This is what I sketched up for the client.

Growing up we loved getting a bunny cake for our birthday. Not to long ago I found this jpg of the bunny cake my mum used to make. (Unfortunately, I’ve lost the reference so if anyone knows where this came from please let me know.)
This week I have the pleasure of making 2 special cakes! The first is for a stag and doe – it’s going to be a lemon cake with chocolate fondant with fondant circles.
The second cake is a surprise theme cake for my husband’s 30th birthday! I’ve been planning this cake for a while and just crossing my fingers that it will turn out the way I want.
Tonight I’m going to start sculpting and making curly “ribbon” for the cakes and also start the baking! I can’t wait to see these cakes come alive – I will keep you posted on their progress!
