Yesterday we celebrated my husband’s 30th birthday. It was a really fun party and I made the cake! I wanted to make it to his taste and incorporate a car cutout. Unfortunately, the 3rd tier didn’t happen but I was still really happy with the cake. It was a chocolate cake with chocolate marshmallow fondant. I haven’t made a lot of 2 tier cakes so I was really happy with how the tiers worked out.

Yesterdays task after work was to finish decorating this cake a friend asked me to do for a stag/doe party. As soon as I got home I got busy mixing the buttercream icing for under the fondant. I add a little bit of creamcheese in with the mix as well as some colorless vanilla. I sprinkled the top with cocoa after the cake was iced. Read the rest of this entry »

This week I’ve been under the weather with a cold/laryngitis so I haven’t been up to much. Tonight was my last cake decorating class so I decided to go because we don’t talk very much so I could be quiet and finish my final cake which incorporated what we’ve learned about gum paste and fondant.

So last night after my first fondant and gum paste class my friend came over to make a 50s inspired cake for her mum’s birthday. I came up with the design idea, she baked the cake and then together we made it happen. Working with a friend was great because the decorating went really “quickly” and we had the cake iced and decorated in under 3 hours. Read the rest of this entry »

So after I finished my last wedding shower cake my sister’s whose birthday was this weekend promptly commented that her birthday was coming up and she sent me a picture of the cake that she wanted which was an incredible 3D super mario inspired cake. Now, I have only taken 2 cake decorating courses and although I’m improving the details of this cake were beyond my beginner capability and I didn’t have all the tools necessary to make a cake of that detail. But I knew she really wanted a super mario cake so I set out to take her challenge and do my best.

Since my eyes are now in recovery I think they are finally starting to go back to “normal” – although they do still feel strange when my eyes get tired – and I feel more confident when I’m doing my cake decorating and photography etc…

This weekend we celebrated at a bridal shower the engagement of my cousin, J. We are all thrilled for her and are really looking forward to her fall wedding. I had the pleasure of decorating a cake for the party. Due to circumstances outside my control I had to bring what supplies I could fit into a carrying bag and decorate the cake the morning of the party. I decided I wanted it to look like it was wrapped in bands of ribbon with tiny blossoms. I made a ring out of marzipan and decorated it with pearl dust. Read the rest of this entry »

Recently I went to visit my Mummy’s Mummy. Upon my arrival I was told that there was a surprise for me but not knowing what to expect I followed my Mum’s instructions and discovered my grandmother had taken in a lodger… Read the rest of this entry »
