This weekend was a busy one with completing one project and also completing 2 cakes.
Here are the final cakes:

First cake up my drum kit cake which used the 4 direction colors: red, black, yellow and white. I was trying to incorporate geometric shapes, music records and notes and a drum kit on the top. I was very pleased with the result. The lower tier was a chocolate with chocolate buttercream icing and the top tier was vanilla with vanilla buttercream icing.

This week I’m making two cakes which I’ve been really excited about.

Tonight I worked on both the cakes but came close to completing this cake. My Hello Kitty Rock star cake. This cake was requested by a co-worker for her daughter’s 4th birthday. Read the rest of this entry »

Today GSL and I worked on our 3rd collaboration cake for her grandparents wedding anniversary. She arrived early and we set to work making different buttercream icings.

We wanted the cake to have a Christmasy feel and look like gifts – GSL wanted the top tier to be a gift and I thought it would contrast nicely with a quilted second layer.

I was really happy with the finished product and I really hope GSL’s family and grandparents like it too!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of celebrating Thanksgiving with my family in Tuscarora. It was so great being there with everyone after being away from there for so long. There is NOTHING like spending time with family.

I really wanted to bake a cake for my Nanny and family. Unfortunately because my health has been questionable I wasn’t able to make one but I brought supplies to bake a cake and did a chocolate cake with buttercream icing and marshmallow fondant daisies. I think it turned out very cute and simple which was nice. (I was a little bummed that I didn’t do a thick enough crumb coat and some crumbs snuck through…)

Here is a close up of my marshmallow fondant daisies.
Now that Thanksgiving is past and I’ve been struggling with a stubborn sinus infection I still have been trying to keep up with my work, art and homemade Christmas gifts. Thursday night I had fun with LP making dinner and watching a movie at home and working on some carving. Read the rest of this entry »

A few weeks ago I was asked to make a special cake – my cousin’s golden birthday cake. She was turning 10 on the 10th. I started thinking about this theme and came up with a design that was whimsical, bright and perhaps a bit impressive. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend I needed to “quickly” make some cupcakes…when I say need I actually mean wanted to as I was bringing them to a birthday party we were crashing…now, how old was the birthday girl? 1!
I needed to make cupcakes that would be whimsical and that didn’t use red food coloring (a common allergy color). So I came up with chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with a vanilla buttercream icing.

First, I iced all the cupcakes with the vanilla buttercream icing that I mixed in a pale teal color. This is a cartoon-y yellow flower that I made.

I made a bunch of white daisies. I cut out teal and white circles to act as a base for all the flowers.

The flowers took about an hour and a half to make which is definitely quicker than I used to be. The circles were really quick and the icing took maybe 15-20 minutes. So I think the decorating took about 2 hours give or a take a few minutes which I think was pretty good.

I was very pleased with how these cupcakes turned out and was happy that I’m getting more efficient and quick at making different fondant flowers and shapes. I loved the look of the cupcakes and think these are the kind of cupcakes that I would be tempted to re-do in different colors for different events. I think everyone really enjoyed them and that’s always what’s most important.

…and not corn, beans and squash! A cake I made with 2 of my sisters!

For months I’ve been promising my 2 youngest sisters that I would show them how to do a fondant cake and yesterday was the day! Sunday afternoon they came out with a pre-made chocolate cake. I had mixed some different fondant colors and made some extra vanilla buttercream icing for underneath. Read the rest of this entry »

This week has been filled with cake! Friday I had the great pleasure of doing a second cake with GSL and yesterday I did a solo cake for my friends’ joint birthday. I wanted this cake to be interesting and reflect the farm. I called it a “homestyle cake” because I did the icing very natural. So it was a vanilla bean pound cake with a fruit jelly filling and then a vanilla bean icing. I loved seeing the little flecks of vanilla in the icing. Read the rest of this entry »

This week my friend and I had the exciting task of creating a cake for our friend’s birthday – the catch – we needed to decorate it in a tight timeframe at work.
