In celebration of the World Cup finale, LP, LM and I got together Saturday morning to decorate some cupcakes. I wanted to incorporate soccer, red (for Spain) and orange (for Holland). We also used green for grass and some soccer themed cake decorations to finish it off.

I will post some more photos later!

This week I’m making two cakes which I’ve been really excited about.

Tonight I worked on both the cakes but came close to completing this cake. My Hello Kitty Rock star cake. This cake was requested by a co-worker for her daughter’s 4th birthday. Read the rest of this entry »

A few weeks ago I was asked to make a special cake – my cousin’s golden birthday cake. She was turning 10 on the 10th. I started thinking about this theme and came up with a design that was whimsical, bright and perhaps a bit impressive. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend I needed to “quickly” make some cupcakes…when I say need I actually mean wanted to as I was bringing them to a birthday party we were crashing…now, how old was the birthday girl? 1!
I needed to make cupcakes that would be whimsical and that didn’t use red food coloring (a common allergy color). So I came up with chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with a vanilla buttercream icing.

First, I iced all the cupcakes with the vanilla buttercream icing that I mixed in a pale teal color. This is a cartoon-y yellow flower that I made.

I made a bunch of white daisies. I cut out teal and white circles to act as a base for all the flowers.

The flowers took about an hour and a half to make which is definitely quicker than I used to be. The circles were really quick and the icing took maybe 15-20 minutes. So I think the decorating took about 2 hours give or a take a few minutes which I think was pretty good.

I was very pleased with how these cupcakes turned out and was happy that I’m getting more efficient and quick at making different fondant flowers and shapes. I loved the look of the cupcakes and think these are the kind of cupcakes that I would be tempted to re-do in different colors for different events. I think everyone really enjoyed them and that’s always what’s most important.

This week my friend and I had the exciting task of creating a cake for our friend’s birthday – the catch – we needed to decorate it in a tight timeframe at work.

Yesterday we celebrated my husband’s 30th birthday. It was a really fun party and I made the cake! I wanted to make it to his taste and incorporate a car cutout. Unfortunately, the 3rd tier didn’t happen but I was still really happy with the cake. It was a chocolate cake with chocolate marshmallow fondant. I haven’t made a lot of 2 tier cakes so I was really happy with how the tiers worked out.

Yesterdays task after work was to finish decorating this cake a friend asked me to do for a stag/doe party. As soon as I got home I got busy mixing the buttercream icing for under the fondant. I add a little bit of creamcheese in with the mix as well as some colorless vanilla. I sprinkled the top with cocoa after the cake was iced. Read the rest of this entry »

As I mentioned this week I’m doing two cakes. Monday night I baked a lemon cake from scratch. I followed a Martha Stewart recipe and was happy with the results. (And loved my house smelling like lemons and cake all night!) I’m going to do an crushed almond or pecan filling between the 2 layers. I’m making a chocolate marshmallow fondant and decorating with pink and teal/blue circles. I will do fondant “pearls” around the edge of the cake in one of both colors. This is what I sketched up for the client.

So last night after my first fondant and gum paste class my friend came over to make a 50s inspired cake for her mum’s birthday. I came up with the design idea, she baked the cake and then together we made it happen. Working with a friend was great because the decorating went really “quickly” and we had the cake iced and decorated in under 3 hours. Read the rest of this entry »
