Things I’ve learned about Rome…

October 30th, 2009

Rome-sights

1. It is very expensive – even when you try to save money: I definitely recommend selecting a hotel with a good breakfast and making lunch – visit a local grocery store to pick up things and take a piece of fruit from breakfast to go so you have a mid-morning snack.

2. When in Rome do as the Romans do: for real! Where they eat and buy their groceries is cheaper than where the tourists eat. The subway is very affordable at €1 a trip or you can purchase day passes but you can also walk a lot of places if you time things out well and that will allow you to see a lot of the city and also find those little places that the Romans go too.

Rome Day 3

Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

This morning we were supposed to go to the Angelus, however it turns out that the Pope is not back yet from a trip so we decided to walk around Vatican and then walked down to Santa Maria in Trastevere. This is a beautiful old church found in a tiny square – locals were all around, playing soccer or just sitting by the fountain. Read the rest of this entry »

Rome Day 2: hey, if you can see it we can walk to it!

September 26th, 2009

Today was filled with lots of walking – since we couldn’t get tickets to the Borghese Museum and gardens we decided to do do some other stuff instead…and stuff we did!

Merman Barberini statue

This morning started with a trip on the metro to a Barberini statue of a Merman – the bee coat of arms indicates the family (located just below the merman).

Rome: St. Peter’s

September 25th, 2009

Today was our first day in Rome! It was pretty crazy since we flew over night, hardly slept and then started our touring at 9am or so.

St. Peter's Dome

First stop, St. Peter’s church. Once inside we did a tour (self-guided) of the inside of the church, followed by climbing the steps to the top of the dome (we elevatored the first 250 steps and then climbed over 300 to the top) and lastly visited the tombs in the basement and prayed by the burial site of Pope John Paul II.
